It has been decades since India attained freedom from British colonial rule. Our cinema has captured many of these stories and their struggle for freedom, that never fail to evoke a sense of patriotism.
Raising a toast on account of our 69th Independence Day, we list down 9 films that explored the battles, the struggles and the series of events that surrounded India's momentous freedom.
Lagaan
This Ashutosh Gowariker’s film is set in the Victorian period of the British colonial rule, Lagaan, although an epic sports drama, captured the trials and tribulations that a common man in India had to go through due to the tax system prevalent in that era.

Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Se
This Ashutosh Gowariker drama is set at the backdrop of the Chittagong uprising in the 1930s with Abhishek Bachchan playing Surya Sen on screen. However,  the film did not completely succeed in striking a chord with the audience.

Bose: The Forgotten Hero
Shyam Benegal’s film depicts Subhash Chandra Bose's life and his activities during the freedom struggle form the crux of this absorbing film.

Swades
This Gowariker's fim, examines the gap between modern and rural India through an NRI NASA employee.

Shaheed
This S.Ram Sharma's film, Shaheed traces the contributions of Bhagat Singh and how he fought valiantly for the country's Independence from the British.

The Legend of Bhagat Singh
This Rajkumar Santoshi’s film, depicted Bhagat Singh as a true revolutionary who was never given a farewell fit for a martyr. The Legend of Bhagat Singh starts with Bhagat Singh's death and how the British wanted to dispose off his body. The film brilliantly brought out Bhagat Singh's contributions to the Indian freedom movement.

Hey Ram
This Kamal Haasan’s film, one of the most controversial films to be made. Hey Ram tells the story behind the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi.

Mangal Pandey: The Rising
This Ketan Mehta’s film, history has it that it was this Indian sepoy who sparked a rebellion against the British, way back in 1857. The film captured the circumstances and events that led to India's First War of Independence.

Rang De Basanti
This Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra's influential film shakes the modern-day apathetic youth out of its comfort zone dubbed as the RDB effect.
The metamorphosis of Rang De Basanti's care-a-damn bunch of merrymaking Delhi University students to secular, solid and justice-seeking comrades is what's most thought provoking.

Happy Independence Day!
